We’ve had a few mild cases of Kennel Cough reported among dogs who’ve attended daycare at Furbaby Pet Care.
What Is Kennel Cough?
Kennel Cough (also known as Bordetella) is a contagious respiratory illness caused primarily by the Bordetella bronchiseptica bacteria. It’s characterized by a harsh, hacking cough that can sound like your dog is trying to clear their throat.
While it may sound serious, most healthy dogs recover fully with rest and supportive care.
How Does It Spread?
Kennel Cough spreads easily between dogs — especially in shared spaces like daycares, boarding facilities, and dog parks.
It can be transmitted through:
-
Airborne droplets from coughing or sneezing
-
Direct contact between dogs
-
Contaminated surfaces like toys, bowls, or shared equipment
How to Protect Your Dog
-
Vaccinate against Bordetella and other respiratory agents.
-
Avoid crowded environments if your dog is unvaccinated or feeling unwell.
-
Keep up with regular vet check-ups to ensure your pet’s respiratory health stays strong.
-
Maintain good hygiene at home and during outings.
What Are the Symptoms?
Common signs of Kennel Cough include:
-
Dry, hacking cough (sometimes with a retching sound)
-
Mild fever
-
Nasal discharge
-
Lethargy or tiredness
-
Loss of appetite
In rare or severe cases, Kennel Cough can progress to pneumonia — so it’s always best to consult your vet if symptoms persist.
